Low 'good' cholesterol numbers linked to depression in women

Over the last few decades, researchers have begun to recognize that low levels of "good" cholesterol, or high density lipoprotein (HDL), can be as detrimental to a person's health as high levels of "bad" cholesterol, known as low density lipoprotein (LDL).

Results of a recent French study suggest that low serum levels of good cholesterol can not only put women at a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, but can also increase their odds of being diagnosed with depression.

Over a seven-year period, lead investigator Marie-Laure Ancelin and her colleagues monitored the lipid levels of a large group of individuals who were over the age of 65, and routinely examined them for symptoms of depression.

At the point of follow-up, the researchers identified a strong link between low HDL levels and clinical depression. This subset of patients was also at a greater risk of developing heart disease and lesions in their blood vessels, which often leads to strokes.

The most efficient way to increase good cholesterol levels is by making lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthy, low-fat diet. The Mayo Clinic reports that obese or overweight individuals can increase their HDL numbers by losing six pounds or more.
