Compound found in tangerines may hinder obesity and related diseases
Flavanoids that are unique to tangerines may help individuals with unhealthy diets fight obesity and stave off diabetes, as well as cardiovascular disease, according to a recent study published in the journal Diabetes. The researchers attempted to induce obesity among two groups of laboratory rodents. Although animals in both subsets were fed high-fat diets, half were provided with portions of the tangerine compound, Nobiletin. The investigators said they expected that the rats would begin to exhibit signs of metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by high blood levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, glucose and fatty liver. When combined, these conditions have been known to increase an individual's risk of developing heart disease or diabetes. Results indicated that compared to rodents in the first group that became obese and showed signs of related diseases, those that were fed Nobiletin had no symptoms of metabolic syndrome and only gained weight gradually."The Nobiletin-treated mice were basically protected from obesity," lead researcher Murray Huff said.Findings from this study suggest that fruits not only promote weight loss by supporting a healthy diet, but may also counteract the negative effects of some non-nutritious foods. ...
