In this fast-paced world, many Americans choose to hit up the local McDonald\'s to rid themselves of hunger pangs. However, these meals have been found to contain unhealthy amounts of fat, sodium and cholesterol while offering little to no real nutritional value.
Now, researchers are finding that home-cooked meals eaten with the family have many health benefits, according to Mark Hyman M.D., as reported in the Huffington Post. For instance, many dinners prepared at home limit the use of high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats. Instead, they feature more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Furthermore, Hyman suggests following guidelines such as a set dinnertime with no phone calls, text messaging and television. He added that creating a special place to eat each night with family may be a great way to start becoming healthier.
Incorporating more lean proteins and whole grains into an overall healthy eating regimen can help individuals maintain a safe weight, while preventing the development of obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 27 percent of Americans are considered obese.
