1.    Obesity is responsible for a 36% increase in healthcare spending (this is more than smoking or alcohol).
2.    As of 2007 over 40% of US companies have active weight reduction programs available for employees. An additional 28% indicated they would be implementing programs to aid employees with weight reduction and/or control in 2008.
3.    Others indicate that they foresee more widespread acceptance and response to cash award programs for appropriate weight loss in the workplace.
4.    The handling and presentation of weight loss programs in the workplace is very important. Approaching an employee about inclusion in such a program could be problematic. Employers are encouraged to consider the potential discrimination issues and weigh the effect to the company’s bottom line.
