The body can cause females to abandon their normal feeding habits after they become pregnant. Experts say that developing healthy eating habits when expecting can help children grow into strong adults, as well as reduce the risk of certain diseases, reports AOL Health.
Experts suggest eating foods such as lean pork, which contains protein, along with iron and zinc. Furthermore, consuming orange juice has been shown to offer folate, which can help prevent neutral tube defects.
Nutrient-dense foods, such as yogurt, peanut butter, chicken, beef, eggs and dairy products, are higher in protein, calcium and iron, all nutrients your baby needs to grow and develop, Rose Ann Hudson, registered dietitian, told the news source.
Researchers from the University of Columbia in Vancouver found that women only need to consume 300 extra calories per day during their second and third trimesters.
Experts warn women not to eat fish high in mercury like shark, king mackerel, tilefish and swordfish because exposure to the element can lead to various diseases for both the mother and baby, including learning disabilities, depression, schizophrenia spectrum disorders and Alzheimer\'s disease.
