Pistachios may be a healthy snack choice for dieters::

While many dieters are apprehensive about eating fat-containing nuts when they are trying to lose weight, the findings of a new study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association indicate that pistachios may actually benefit reed-calorie eating regimens.

The researchers used energy value calculations to determine that pistachios have nearly 6 percent fewer calories than previously estimated. They said that this makes the shelled items the least fattening nut variety.

Moreover, the investigators found that fat from pistachios is not fully absorbed by an individual\'s body during the digestive process.

Our research shows in-shell snackers eat 41-percent fewer calories than those who snack on shelled nuts. We also found that in-shell pistachios offer a visual cue to help reduce intake. When leftover shells are cleared immediately, snackers eat up to 22 percent more compared to leaving left over shells as a reminder of consumption, researcher James Painter said.

Among 52 overweight or obese participants, those who ate pistachios instead of pretzels in between meals were more likely to achieve their weight loss goals, according to the study\'s findings.

Other low-calorie food options that may help promote a balanced diet include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
