Mixed results for citywide weight loss programs::

Obesity affects nearly 27 percent of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This statistic alone has prompted many states and cities to launch their own weight loss programs, the Los Angeles Times reports.

For instance, in 2001, Philadelphia made a goal for its citizens to drop 76 tons. Furthermore, a newer program in Corpus Christi, Texas seeks to have its residents lose 50,000 pounds in 2011.

I think these programs are well-intended, but a little misguided, James Hill, professor of health and wellness at the University of Colorado, told the news source.

However, health experts told the news source that the programs may need more focus and that its participants may require more tools to achieve the goals.

Oklahoma City residents recently accepted the mayor\'s challenge to lose one million pounds. As a result, citizens are almost two-thirds of the way to accomplishing the goal, according to the program\'s website. The city is using advice-laden websites, newsletters and nutrition workshops to help inspire people to lose weight.

Consuming fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and lean protein may help people reduce their waist circumference, while reducing calorie intake.
