HCG Diets and Alcohol Consumption

So you’ve heard about the HCG diets, and you want to try it out for yourself, but you’re concerned, because you really need that drink at the end of the day to wind down.  You know that a lot of these diets don’t permit alcohol consumption, and you suspect that these oral HCG drops and the associated meal plans are not going to be any different.

The thing is, though, that HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone that works directly with the hypothalamus gland—the gland that controls the part of the brain linked to emotional eating and drinking, including cravings for alcohol.  Habitual drinkers, even borderline alcoholics, find that they don’t feel the need as much on the HCG diet.

Alcohol and HCG
Even though recent studies have shown that alcohol’s ability to relax the brain, when used in moderation, could have postive effects on health, the HCG diet might help break the cycle of absolutely needing that release.  However, those who do elect to have a drink while on the diet usually find that a much smaller amount than what would normally get them buzzed will do the trick.

If you do find yourself needing a drink, a small glass of vodka with mineral water and a little bit of lemon would be permissible; you could also mix the vodka with eight ounces of orange juice, as one of your juice servings of the day.  Other HCG dieters have still lost weight this way.  If you do choose to drink on the diet, pay close attention to sugar content—you want as little as possible!  Obviously you can’t have a big beer and expect the diet to still be very effective.

Alcohol After HCG
Dr. Simeons, the creator of the original HCG protocol, didn’t figure alcohol in to his weight loss plan, but for his maintenance plan. Once you stop taking the drops, which you can only do for 40 days at a time—he does allow for a glass (eight ounces) of wine with dinner.

If you feel that you’re drinking too much, or would just like to not feel dependant on alchohol, what better time to cut back or even quit?  You may find that it’s not as much a necessary part of your life as you thought it was.
