Emotions And Overeating

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The connection between emotions and overeating isn’t in question. Industry experts accept the obvious link. What is still being questioned by many is the exact relationship between emotions and overeating. This is a difficult relationship to define due to the fact that the cycle can be individual, but it can also be a cycle defined by a family unit or social group. It’s not a concept that is easily defined.

The basic concept is well known and well used: comfort food. Comfort foods are those items that people reach for in reaction to unpleasant emotions. So the cause of this particular moment of time of eating is emotional. Fear, anger, depression and anxiety are some of the main negative emotions that lead people to eat for comfort. Temporary and/or chronic overeating provides people with a feeling of relief from those negative feelings that are afflicting them. Food provides a temporary relief from the overeater’s emotional pain.

Other positive feelings are often obtained by the individual succumbing to overeating in response to negative emotions. Food preparation, discussion or even just the act of eating are often a distraction from the negative feelings and thoughts. Overeating is often seen as a reward providing the individual with a feeling of gratification. It can also provide feelings of comfort (thus the term “comfort foods”) and a sense of being loved.

Overeaters (those who suspect themselves of the problem or who have been repeatedly accused of the problem by loved ones or medical professionals) should take the first step to stopping their personal cycle. The first step is knowing it’s there and defining it. It seems easy. But it can be difficult. Identify the characteristics of your overeating cycle by keeping an eating diary. It will document what you’re eating. When you’re eating. And why you’re eating. Always note if you were hungry when you were eating, as well.

If you didn’t eat when you were hungry…why were you eating? Was it after a certain situation occurred? Was it at a certain time of day? Was it in a specific location? By defining the issue behind the overeating the cycle can be broken before it escalates from a problem to a health issue. Obesity is directly linked to increased risks for many common illnesses and diseases.

Defining the problem, the habits and the cycle makes stopping it much easier. Individuals are able to stop the negative cycle created by emotions and overeating and get control of their weight. And once the cycle is broken they can focus on losing the weight they’ve already gained. There are all natural methods recently made available that offer , weight loss for those who are able to dedicate themselves to following the homeopathic HCG diet weight loss programs.

Obesity And Eating Too Much (Overeating)

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Obesity has been under the microscope so to speak for over 50 years. Study upon study has added to the stockpile of information attempting to define, and understand the issue. One obvious connection that is often included in obesity studies is overeating. Early studies indicated that the reason for overeating lay solely at the door of anxiety.

Since these early study conclusions…many more studies have been undertaken and completed. While original research indicated that anxiety was the reason for overeating…it isn’t quite true. Anxiety is no longer accepted as the sole reason for overeating. The problem is much wider than that. There are more than one ways to fall victim to the issue.

Further studies conducted throughout the last several decades have led experts to believe that rather than anxiety…it is emotion that rules when it comes to overeating. At least this is true when the subjects being studied are obese individuals. This connection between emotion and overeating is apparent in both obese individuals seeking treatment and obese individuals not seeking treatment.

Overeating amongst the obese carries some definite characteristics. These defining characteristics include: a lack of real hunger, secrecy, high calorie/high fat “favorite” foods, etc. The “emotion” leading up to or causing the overeating vary from individual to individual. But they are often found amongst the following list: frustration, depression, stress, anger, boredom, loneliness, and anxiety.

Emotional distress seems to trigger overeating in obese individuals more than normal weight individuals according to study findings. Although coming up with accurate conclusions is difficult considering it is difficult to come up with an accurate “normal weight” control group for any obesity study. Studies typically utilize college students as their control participants so the socioeconomic variables are very limited when comparing the control group to an actual random selection of “normal weight” individuals.

New studies continue to be undertaken in order to further understand the relationship between obesity and overeating. Emotional dependency on food is becoming more clearly defined with each additional study.

Solving The Obesity Problem By Identifying The Causes

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Obesity is turning into a regular occurrence. People who feel as if they are regularly active are still gaining weight. People who feel as if they regularly incorporate healthy foods into their diets are still gaining weight. People who fully recognize the negative health effects of obesity and overweight issues are still gaining weight.

This indicates a desperate need for change. But before society can make any effective changes to decrease the regularity of the obesity issue the problem has to be clearly defined.

There isn’t just one potential cause; there are several:

1. The genetic makeup of the body: genes play a definite part in the propensity for weight gain.

2. The environment: what is happening in the daily life of an individual plays a definite part in the propensity for weight gain.

3. psychological and emotional

Genes are not solely responsible for the obesity epidemic. Some studies have concluded that the increased risk for obesity in the children of obese parents is minimal. But others still see genetics as a defining cause of obesity. Most agree that even if it isn’t the sole cause or even a leading cause…genetics contribute to the risk of obesity and overweight.

Environmental causes include all the unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits that are accepted and even encouraged in today’s society. High fat, high sugar, high calorie foods are a staple. People are not active; many are sedentary. These habits lead to weight gain. And weight gain leads to less activity.

Psychological and emotional factors can often be pinpointed to depression, anxiety and stress. Many become attached to high calorie, unhealthy foods after using it as a comfort food.

The obesity problem continues to become more of an issue as time passes. Instead of overcoming it; society is falling victim to it. Some individuals are choosing to fight it on an individual level by accessing , homeopathic weight loss diet programs. Some experts suggest that this sort of , individual action may eventually break the cycle.
