Origins of the HCG Treatment

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Many people are surprised to discover that the origins of the HCG treatment did not involve weight loss or the treatment of obesity at all. In fact, Dr. Simeons’ main focus was curing an unusual endocrine disorder that delays the onset of puberty in teen-aged boys. As it turns out, this particular condition – dysfunction of the pituitary gland – also causes extreme obesity in such patients.

Therein lies the tale.

Dr. Simeons Treats the “Fat Boys”

Dr. Albert Simeons was a gifted endocrinologist who lived between 1900 and 1976. A graduate of the prestigious University of Heidelberg School of Medicine, Dr. Simeons developed an interest in tropical diseases; in fact, among medical scientists, he is best remembered for developing a diagnostic tool for malaria.

His interest in diseases such as malaria and dengue fever led him to sub-Saharan Africa for a time, and then, in 1930, to a hospital in Mumbai, India, where he spent the next two decades of his career.

Endocrinology was a relatively new branch of medicine in those days. Research had shown that when injected with a hormone produced by pregnant women, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, pre-pubescent rats would experience sexual maturity. Eventually, this became a treatment for Froelich’s Disease, a pituitary condition that causes the symptoms described above.

When Dr. Simeons administered this treatment however, he noticed another result: significant weight loss. Over the next several years, Dr. Simeons came to many startling conclusions about the nature of obesity, most of which even today fly in the face of commonly accepted wisdom on the subject.

Obesity is Not Simple

It is common, and even popular to blame the current epidemic of obesity on laziness, over-indulgence and lack of willpower – but Dr. Simeons realized early on that obesity was in fact the result of many complex variables, including genetic and societal factors. One of the most interesting conclusions had to do with the nature of agrarian-based society:

“In pre-Neolithic times, man ate only when he was hungry and only as
much as he required too still the pangs of hunger. Moreover, much of his
food was raw and all of it was unrefined.”

Then, about 10,000 years ago, the development of agriculture and its labor demands changed everything:

“The institution of regular meals meant that man had to eat more
than his body required at the moment of eating so as to tide him
over until the next meal. Food rendered easily digestible suddenly
flooded his body with nourishment of which he was in no need at
the moment. Somehow, somewhere this surplus had to be stored.”

HCG Diets – The Physiology

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

What follows is a rather technical explanation of the action of hormones and how they function in the body.  Specifically, the functions of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) and the role it plays in HCG diets. As a hormone, HCG is after all nothing more than organic molecules forming chains of amino acids – the building blocks of life – that constitute specific proteins.

Read on for a scientific analysis of the HCG program.

What Is a Hormone?

Like most medical terms, the word hormone is from Greek: ???? (“ore-MEY”) means “impetus” or “that which drives or motivates.” A hormone is simply a biochemical substance that is excreted by various glands into the bloodstream, where it functions as a type of messaging system, carrying signals from one cell to another. If you can picture your circulatory system as a series of fiber optic cables, hormones would be the light pulses that carry data from one place to another.

Just as your PC must have a hardware and a software interface (a browser), in order to turn the data into information that you can use (text and images), so too do living cells require a receptor. This receptor is made up of specific proteins that allow certain hormones to bind to them. When this binding takes place, a biochemical message is delivered, or “downloaded” into the cell. It tells that cell how to behave and carry out specific functions.

All life forms have hormones, including plants (the latter are known as phytohormones). Hormones in animals (including humans) are either endocrine or exocrine. Endocrine hormones are released directly into the bloodstream by “ductless” glands that are part of the body’s endocrine system. Exocrine glands on the other hand are part of a system of ducts that release hormones directly into bodily tissues.

Endocrine glands include the:

  • adrenal gland, which pumps us full of adrenalin when we perceive a threat or are frightened
  • pituitary gland, which regulates growth, blood pressure, and kidney function and sex organs
  • thyroid, which manufactures proteins and determines how the body uses energy, thus controlling metabolic rates

Of course, endocrine glands are simply machines that manufacture a product – in this case, hormones. Ultimately, all these functions must be controlled by the brain. The neural system communicates with the endocrine system, the same way your PC communicates with a modem or Ethernet card to communicate with the Internet.

In the human body, this “modem” is called the hypothalamus gland.

The “Boss”

It is through the hypothalamus that the brain, which ultimately runs the entire show, controls our metabolism, our heartbeat, our respiratory rate, our digestion and virtually every other involuntary (autonomic) function in the body. Located at the base of the brain just above the brain stem, which leads to the spinal cord, the hypothalamus is a gland that is present in all fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. In humans, this gland is about the size and shape of an almond.

In addition to controlling involuntary physiological processes and metabolism, the hypothalamus also controls body temperature as well as fatigue, thirst and hunger. It thus plays a pivotal role in the HCG diet.

The HCG diet essentially makes the hypothalamus work better. When it works properly, the body can easily lose weight.
