Dr. Simeons’ Diet: Startling Discoveries

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Dr. Simeons’ diet was not a discovery; rather, it was the end result of many years of research and experimentation. In some ways, it is still a work in progress as we continue to refine and perfect the HCG program and build on Dr. Simeons’ protocols.

Dr. Simeons Goes to India

Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons was born in London, England in 1900. There is little available material regarding his early life, but after the First World War, he was able to attend the University of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany, which remains one of Europe’s preeminent medical schools. He graduated summa cum laude and went on to complete residency programs in Switzerland and Austria, ultimately specializing in endocrinology.

Eventually, Dr. Simeons developed an interest in tropical diseases; among medical historians, he is best known for developing a diagnostic procedure for malaria in addition to inventing the first modern early pregnancy test – which is designed to detect HCG.  Though it should be noted that presence of HCG in the body will not necessarily result in a positive reading on a pregnancy test.  Nor does placing HCG drops directly on a test necessarily result in a positive reading.

It is in his work in the latter area where the real story of the HCG weight loss method begins.

The “Fat Boys”

Dr. Simeons’ interest in tropical diseases eventually led him to India in 1930, at that time part of the British Empire. Taking up a post in Mumbai (Bombay), Dr. Simeons began treating young men who, because of a disorder of the pituitary gland, had experienced delayed puberty – and at the same time had become morbidly obese.

Doctors at that time had just begun using Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (a hormone produced by women during the early weeks of pregnancy) as a treatment for these kinds of pituitary problems. Dr. Simeons was administering this treatment to the patients he identified as “the Fat Boys” and noticed something interesting: as it stimulated the development of secondary sexual characteristics in these patients (lowering of the voice, facial hair, etc.), it also appeared to trigger weight loss.

Dr. Simeons spent most of the next two decades studying this phenomenon. His conclusions on obesity led him to develop what we now know as “Dr. Simeon’s Protocols” – the specific menus of a low calorie diet combined with small doses of the HCG hormone.

Eventually, Dr. Simeons published his findings in a number of research papers in the 1950s, many of which were published in prestigious medical journals. One of these, entitled Pounds & Inches: A New Approach to Obesity, is freely available here at HCG Diet Direct through a download on our home page. This paper explains Dr. Simeons’ conclusions in greater depth, and is required reading for anyone who wants to understand the true causes of obesity and how the HCG weight loss method addresses these issues and restores physiological balance.

HCG and Dr. Simeons’ Diet

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

In an earlier post, you learned about hormones and their function. The branch of medicine that is concerned with hormones is called endocrinology and is the basis of Dr. Simeons’ diet.

To review: hormones (of which HCG is one) are specific proteins, the function of which is to carry biochemical messages to cells. These cells then carry out specific functions. Endocrine hormones are excreted into directly into the bloodstream by various glands. These glands receive their orders from the brain via an “interface” known as the hypothalamus.

The Big Kahuna

The hypothalamus excretes its own special type of hormones. These are known as neurohormones.  Among these are gonadotropin-releasing hormones. HCG, as you know stands for human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is at the heart of the HCG program.

Note that the hypothalamus does not, by itself, release gonadotropin. It produces its own neurohormone that in turn stimulates the production of gonadotropin from the pituitary gland, which secretes the hormones that control growth, blood pressure and sexual function, among other bodily functions.

Dr. Simeons came up with the HCG diet as a result of his work with patients suffering from pituitary dysfunction, which had caused them to become morbidly obese. One of the functions of the pituitary gland is to regulate the conversion of food (calories) into energy. The word for this process is (you guessed it) metabolism.

About Gonadotropins

All mammals produce gonadotropins, which are related to sex and reproduction. However, chorionic gonadotropins, such as HCG, are unique to primates such as monkeys, apes and humans.

The chorionic gonadotropin, in primates, is excreted by the placenta, which connects the fetus to the mother’s system. When HCG interacts with a specific receptor in the uterus, it stimulates the production of yet another hormone known as progesterone. This hormone causes the growth of blood vessels and capillaries, which help to provide nourishment to the developing fetus.

HCG serves another function as well. As you may remember from elementary science, atoms may be positively or negatively charged. Organic molecules may contain predominantly positive or negative charges. As it turns out, HCG has a predominantly negative charge. The effect of this is to repel maternal antibodies, which may otherwise react to the presence of the father’s genetic material and attack as if it were some kind of pathogen.

Other Medical Uses of HCG

Because it is a gonadotropin and therefore is involved in reproduction, HCG can be used to stimulate sexual function. This in fact is what FDA has approved HCG for over the past few decades. It has been found to stimulate and promote ovulation in women and sperm production in men. The hormone is extracted from the urine of pregnant women, then purified and made into injections, which are administered in fertility clinics.

Current medical research shows that cancer cells excrete small amounts of HCG. This may be part of the reason that immunotherapy for cancer has been unsuccessful. On the other hand, HCG also plays a role in cell differentiation, the process by which generalized, all-purpose cells become specialized, and it also pays a role in apoptosis, or “cell death.” This has interesting implications for oncology.

The Science Behind the HCG Diet

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

The HCG diet plan is based on principles of a branch of medicine known as endocrinology, which Dr. Albert Simeons conducted extensive research in this area over six decades ago. Endocrinology is the study of hormones, their function and the glands that secrete them.

Some of these glands are probably familiar to you. The pituitary and the thyroid, which control growth and metabolism, are probably the best known outside the medical profession. Certain hormones are also probably familiar to you.

For example, if you enjoy parachuting and bungee jumping, you may very well be addicted to the hormone known as adrenaline. This biochemical substance is released by the adrenal gland when we feel as if we are in a life-threatening situation, heightening our perceptions and giving us the “energy rush” we need in order to fight or run.

There are also sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, which (among other things) trigger the development of “secondary sex characteristics” such as a low voice and body and facial hair in boys and breasts and menstruation in girls.

In essence, hormones are biochemical substances that control a range of bodily functions.
HCG, or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, is one such hormone.

The Functions of HCG

The primary function of HCG is to protect the environment in which a fetus gestates, making certain that the uterus is healthy and that the mother’s system does not inadvertently interfere with the fetus’ early development during the first trimester. Modern pregnancy tests are designed to detect the presence of HCG in a woman’s urine.  However is should be noted that homeopathic HCG will not result in a positive reading if placed on a pregnancy test.

In medicine and health care, HCG is used to treat fertility issues in both men and women by stimulating the production of sperm and eggs respectively. Most recently, it has been discovered that cancer cells excrete small amounts of HCG. This hormone is thus a potential marker that can help oncologists to detect the presence of tumors that might otherwise be difficult to diagnose.

What Dr. Simeons Found

During the treatment of patients with pituitary gland dysfunction, which had caused extreme obesity, Dr. Simeons found that by administering injections of small amounts of the HCG hormone, these patients were able to lose weight when put on a low calorie diet. This was something that the low calorie diet alone was unable to achieve.

In later years, Dr. Simeons published his findings in a paper entitled Pounds and Inches – a New Approach to Obesity. That paper is available in .pdf format on our home page.
