Oral HCG and the Protocol: Understanding Rounds and Phases

What’s the Protocol?
The protocol is the “Pounds and Inches” guidelines set forth by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, a British endocrinologist who discovered the link between the hormone and weight loss. This protocol is also known as the HCG weight loss cure, or the HCG diet program. It consists of three distinct phases of the diet, adherence to a low-calorie eating plan, and taking the hormonal supplement to affect rapid weight loss.

What’s a Round of the Protocol?
A round of the protocol means completing the three distinct phases of the diet plan. If you are following Kevin Trudeau’s protocol, you will have four distinct phases of the plan. You can complete more than one round of protocol if you need to lose more weight, but it is generally advised that you wait at least three weeks before beginning the process again.

What Are the Phases of the Protocol?
According to Dr. Simeons, there are three distinct phases of the plan:

Phase I “Reduction”–You begin phase 1 with two “load days,” during which you eat as many high fat foods as you need to feel full. Emphasis is placed on fats that are plant-based, such as avocadoes, nut butters, olive oil, and the like. These two days are crucial to preparing the body to release weight. After the two days, you begin the VLCD (very low-calorie diet), in which you consume no more than 500 calories per day with an emphasis on lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables. This phase lasts a minimum of 15-23 days.

Phase II “Intermittent Maintenance”–During this phase, you begin preparing your body to enter maintenance, but you still restrict your sugar and starch intake. The object of this phase is to continue to avoid high glycemic index foods while enjoying more of the low glycemic index foods. Many dieters confuse this phase with the Atkins plan, but you are not allowed unrestricted protein during this phase or any other. This phase lasts around 21 days.

Phase III “Maintenance”–During this phase, you slowly add high glycemic foods while continuing to monitor your weight. If you begin to gain rather than maintain, you need to restrict these sugary or starchy foods and enjoy low glycemic foods instead. The portion control and healthy eating habits you learned during the previous phases should help you maintain a healthy weight.

Your Food Choices on the HCG Diet Program
