HCG Diet and Exercise: the Facts

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

It is an odd fact that the HCG diet and exercise are not compatible. Furthermore, strenuous exercise while on the HCG program can actually sabotage your weight loss efforts. It is best to confine yourself to mild exercise such as walking until you are done taking HCG.

500 Calories a Day

At the heart of the Simeons’ weight loss method is a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) of a mere 500 calories a day. Under normal circumstances, this is barely enough to survive.  This is not what happens on the HCG diet, however. The reason is rooted in how the body responds to starvation in a state of nature and how this response is modified by the presence of HCG.

As Nature Made Us

Due largely to our evolution – descended from forest-dwelling apes who were driven out onto the savannas of central Africa between six and eight million years ago – our human physiology was adapted in such a way as to hold on to fat stores, which are in a form known as adipose. It was a survival mechanism that came into play. However, with the rise of civilization and the invention of agriculture, normal feeding patterns were forced to change and new foods were introduced into the human diet.

According to 20th-Century endocrinologist Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons, who first developed the HCG program in the late 1940s and early 1950s, this is among the root causes of modern obesity.

What Happens

When the body senses starvation, it first responds by slowing down all metabolic processes in order to conserve energy. Next, it reaches for the most easily available source of nutrition, which unfortunately consists of lean muscle mass. Next, it will feed off the visceral structural fat that cushions the internal organs. Needless to say, this is very dangerous to good health.

According to Dr. Simeons, the excess fat that we are all trying to lose is much like old motor fuel that has been stored too long. Still very volatile, it has nonetheless solidified into a form that cannot be used in the gas tank to run the car. HCG breaks this adipose down into a form that is more readily available, and forces the hypothalamus to use this source before any others.

The Dangers of Exercise

Because of the HCG, your system is burning up calories at the maximum rate. Strenuous exercise pushes your body beyond these safe limits, and can cause severe dehydration while pushing our heart rate to dangerous levels.

This said, it is actually a good idea to engage in mild exercise, such an a daily stroll around the block in order to get oxygen to the brain – which in turn, will help to maintain a positive outlook and assist you in completing the program successfully.

Why Buy Oral HCG?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Simply put, it’s easier to buy oral HCG and easier to use it if you plan to do the HCG diet on your own. Getting injections by yourself is an uncertain process. Legally, you cannot do this without a prescription, and should not be taking HCG injections without a doctor’s supervision.

This said there is no reason not to take HCG injections, if you have the time and the money to do it. Such clinics are expensive however, and their services are not always covered by health insurance plans.

HCG Diet Clinics

In fact, we operate our own HCG weight loss clinic in Mesa, Arizona where you can receive injections and work with a qualified physician. There are also weight loss clinics offering HCG treatments in Seattle, Chicago and other major cities across the U.S. Chances are good that there is one within a day’s drive of where you live.

If such a journey is not possible, then oral HCG is probably the best solution for you. It is still possible for you to consult with our staff physician over the Internet for a nominal fee if you still have questions and concerns. In fact, regardless of whether you’re using drops or injections, we recommend that you speak with a physician at least once in order to make sure you are following Dr. Simeon’s protocols correctly and getting the most benefit from the HCG program.

Using HCG Oral Drops

Oral HCG is a homeopathic remedy.  It is not like a medication that you simply swallow. The compounds contained in a homeopathic medication are fragile and can easily be destroyed by excessive heat and the digestive acids excreted in the stomach. This is why HCG drops are placed under the tongue and held there while the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. The usual dosage is 4 milliliters, or approximately 15 drops, administered three times a day prior to meals.

Once this medication is in your bloodstream, it works in two ways. First, it breaks down the nutrient and calorie-rich excess fat deposits (known as “adipose”) into a form that is more readily metabolized. Secondly, it resets your body’s thermostat by re-regulating the hypothalamus gland in such a way that your metabolic rate is not lowered when on the 500 calorie diet.

A History of HCG Diets

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

HCG diets today are primarily based on the research of British endocrinologist Dr. Albert T. Simeons, who worked in India between 1931 and 1949. However, the origins of the HCG program actually goes back a few years before that.

A Remarkable Year

1927 was a banner year in terms of significant events. The biggest event was Charles Lindbergh’s solo flight from New York to Paris, but there were many others. Only a few weeks earlier, an inventor named Philo Farnsworth successfully transmitted the first television picture, though it would be over twenty years before his invention became practical.

Earlier that year, the first transatlantic phone call was successfully placed between New York and London.  Later that fall, The Jazz Singer, which was the first film to feature sound, was released in the U.S. Two months later, the first “modern” Broadway musical, Show Boat, opened its two-year run in New York City. It was also in 1927 that the population of the world reached two billion.

That same year, an important medical discovery was made, though it did not make the headlines: medical researchers discovered that the urine of pregnant women contained a biochemical that was not present at other times. The test for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin was the first reliable pregnancy test, and is still used in this capacity.

What HCG Does

Like all hormones that regulates bodily at the cellular level, HCG is a type of biochemical “messenger.” Essentially, HCG protects the fetus during the early months of gestation, making sure it receives sufficient nutrients (regardless of what happens to the mother) and suppressing the mother’s immune system should her antibodies attack the father’s DNA as a “foreign” pathogen. Significantly, HCG levels are at their highest during the first trimester, when a woman is least likely to be aware of her pregnancy (and therefore probably not likely to eat properly).

In addition, HCG affects the development of the reproductive system. Because it is “gonadotrophic,” it can be used to treat boys who experience delayed puberty due to pituitary dysfunction. It is also a common fertility treatment that can increase the production of sperm in men and eggs in women.

Dr. Simeons noted that when overweight patients with pituitary dysfunction were given small amounts of HCG, they could be put on a restricted calorie diet without suffering feelings of extreme hunger and deprivation.

How HCG Diets Work

According to Dr. Simeons’ protocols, when the patient starts taking HCG injections, s/he is to eat as much high-fat food as possible for the first two to three days. The reasons are twofold:

1.)    It takes up to 72 hours for HCG to start working
2.)    It “kick-starts” the metabolism, giving it momentum

After the second or third day, the patient is restricted to an ultra-low calorie diet of no more than 500 calories a day. By this time, HCG in the system is breaking down stored fat accumulations, allowing the body to obtain the additional 1,000 – 1,500 calories required for normal metabolism from this source.

This is how people are able to lose one or even two pounds a day on the HCG diet.

Eating While on HCG Diet Plans

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

HCG diet plans may seem like magic, but they are not. They are based on solid scientific research. Furthermore, an HCG diet works only to the extent that Dr. Simeon’s protocols are followed. You cannot consume more than 500 calories a day (this forces your body to pull out the additional 1,000 – 2,000 calories necessary for normal metabolism from your fat stores when regulated by HCG), and there are only certain foods that you may eat. This is important; all aspects of the HCG diet work together to restore balance to your bodily systems and normal fat burning.

Verboten

You will need to eliminate all sources of fat – and not only from your diet. Soaps and skin creams that contain fat should also be avoided. Basically, you need to make certain that your body has no other source of fat other than what you are carrying around your belly or hips. Fat is necessary for good health, but if there is another source available, your body will get it from that source and not your own fat stores. For this reason, you must also avoid sugar and refined grains – which as carbohydrates are chemically similar to fat and metabolize in the same way.

Alcohol is also forbidden. In addition to being largely empty calories, alcohol is a depressant that can slow down your metabolism – and this you absolutely do not want to have happen.

In General

Pretty much, all you are allowed to have while on the HCG program is lean meat, poultry and fish and fresh vegetables. For drink, think black coffee, unsweetened tea, or plain water. It is best to select organic foods and purified water, since chemical adulterants have played a major part in throwing our bodies out of balance and causing abnormal weight gain in the first place. If you must have something sweet, you are allowed a small apple, citrus fruit or cup of berries (unsweetened, unless you are using stevia).

Your Daily Diet

Breakfast will generally be half a citrus fruit (such as grapefruit) or an apple and a cup of tea. At lunch, you may have a bit of chicken or cold water fish with some celery, onion and lettuce, along with a piece of whole grain zwieback. Dinner could be a small piece of lean ham or beef with spinach or asparagus.

It is important that these foods not be fried in oil or butter. They may be roasted in an oven or grilled, but again, you need to avoid ingesting any fat whatsoever in order for the HCG program to work.

Staying With It

HCG diets may not have a lot of appeal, but keep in mind that once the HCG kicks in, you won’t be feeling hungry or deprived. In fact, because of the fat that’s being burned, these small portions are likely to be quite satisfying.

In any event, you won’t be on the HCG for very long at a time. Because the body builds up tolerance to HCG, it is necessary to take a three-to-four week break every 21-42 days.

Anyone can do anything for a few weeks – and the rewards are worth it.

The HCG Weight Loss Cure

Monday, March 1st, 2010

While the HCG weight loss cure can produce some dramatic results, it is important to understand that it is not simply a “magic bullet.” In fact, HCG drops are only part of an overall weight loss program that requires all components to be in place and all instructions to be followed to the letter in order for it to work.

Step One: Preparation

It may seem counter-intuitive, but the first course of action called for by Dr. Simeons’ protocols is to stuff yourself with as much rich, fatty foods as you can get down during your initial two days of taking HCG. The reason is that fat being a rich energy source will rev up the metabolism, giving it the momentum it needs to keep going during what is to follow.

Step Two: Cutting Back

It is pretty well known that a 500-calorie-a-day diet is close to starvation levels. This sounds scary to most people, and so it should. You do not want to undertake this lightly. Nonetheless, it is necessary, and make no mistake: you are likely to feel some real hunger and deprivation for about two days.

Fortunately, this will pass. What happens is that the HCG unlocks the fat deposits in your cells, making them readily available as an alternative source of energy. At the same time, the hormone overrides the programming of the hypothalamus gland, which would normally attempt to slow down your metabolism and start feeding on lean tissues before burning this excess fat.

Since you are ingesting a mere 500 calories, your body requires between 1,500 and 2,500 calories to maintain itself, the deficit has to be made up somewhere. Suddenly, the fat that you have been carrying around on your hips or belly will start to melt away as it flows into your bloodstream, providing energy for your metabolic processes. This is why people on the HCG diet feel little or no hunger, and the tiny portions permitted under Dr. Simeon’s protocols are more than satisfying while on the program.

Step Three: Adjust Your Activity

Here is another paradox: vigorous exercise and the HCG diet simply don’t go together.

The reason is that you are already burning calories at such a prodigious rate that any extra effort may indeed push you “over the edge” and result in some problems. This is not to say that you shouldn’t exercise altogether.  A little walking every day in order to clear the mind and to elevate the heart rate slightly is a good thing and it will keep you in a more positive mood. However, strenuous exercise such as high-impact aerobics and weight lifting should definitely be avoided.

Step Four: Finishing Up

It is important that you do not take HCG for more than forty days at a time. The reason is that your body will ultimately build up a tolerance for it and it will lose its effectiveness. If you need to lose more weight than you can in one forty-day session, it does not hurt at all to take a three to four week break from the HCG program.

With HCG, Dr. Simeons’ Diet Preserves Muscle Mass

Friday, February 5th, 2010

You have probably heard about major concerns regarding HCG, Dr. Simeons’ diet and health. This low calorie diet allows you to eat no more than 500 calories a day, which is risky at best After all, most humans in normal health require at least 1,500 calories a day, and some require as much as 2,000-2,500. Under normal circumstances, someone attempting weight loss by restricting themselves to such a low calorie diet would waste away, losing muscle mass before they would burn fat.

This does not happen on the HCG program however. The key lies in how HCG changes your metabolic processes, forcing your body to burn excess fat from the beginning instead of muscle tissue.

It’s Unnatural

Contrary to popular judgmental wisdom, fat is not about laziness or lack of “will power.”

In fact, virtually nobody chooses to be fat, any more than they choose to be white or black, gay or straight, short or tall.  According to Dr. Simeons’ research, obesity is the result of many complex variables. Some of these are genetic in nature; others are due to the modern lifestyle, including food choices and eating patterns imposed upon us by agriculture.

For example, did you know that hunting-gathering peoples do not normally eat grains and legumes or dairy products? These are plants that normally must be cultivated. For the first 90,000 years or so, they did not exist in the human diet. Like their simian relatives (chimpanzees and gorillas), Stone Age humans ate tree fruit, wild root vegetables, eggs and meat. The human digestive system was simply not designed for many agricultural products we take for granted today.

This said, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that larger women were considered desirable in later Stone Age cultures. This is still true in many parts of Africa and Polynesia. Such women are viewed as more fertile and able to bear strong offspring. Such genetic traits would naturally be passed on to children.

Finally, there is the subject of eating patterns. In nature, all primates (including humans) are browsers who nibble on small amounts of food over the course of the day. This kind of eating is not possible in an agricultural society due to the intensive labor demands. Humans were forced to eat occasional meals at set times, ingesting more calories that they required for immediate metabolic needs. Those extra calories wind up being stored around the abdomen and on the hips as adipose.

HCG Unlocks The Energy

Adipose is a rich source of energy and nutrients, much like whale blubber that sustains Inuit people in Arctic regions. However, adipose is not readily available to humans as an energy source when calories are reduced. This is why humans normally “waste away” on a low calorie diet. With HCG, Dr. Simeons’ diet makes adipose readily available for metabolism by reprogramming the hypothalamus. On the HCG program, when you restrict yourself to Dr. Simeons’ low calorie diet, the hypothalamus obtains the extra calories from adipose, not lean muscle tissue. It’s that simple!

About HCG Diet and Exercise

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

It may seem counter-intuitive, but the fact is that the HCG Diet and Exercise do not go together. In fact, strenuous exercise while taking HCG for weight loss is actually not a good idea; you should avoid strenuous exercise until you stop taking HCG.

The VLCD

One of the major components of the HCG program is the Very Low Calorie Diet, or VLCD. This amounts to a mere 500 calories a day. Under normal circumstances, the human body requires between three and five time that amount. 500 calories a day is no where near enough calories to survive.  Normally, your body would go into starvation mode.

So, why does this not happen to people on the HCG diet?

It has to do with how the body normally responds to starvation and how HCG modifies that response in such a way that good health is maintained.

Because of the way in which we evolved, our bodies have been programmed to hold on to life-giving adipose, which is the excess fat that collects around the abdomen, hips and thighs. Dr. A.T.W. Simeons concluded that this is a very unnatural phenomenon that became increasingly common after our physiological evolution collided with the development and demands of agriculture, which changed our diets and eating patterns dramatically.

What happens is that when the body goes into “starvation mode,” it will begin to literally cannibalize itself, first feeding off of lean muscle tissue, then the visceral fat deposits that are vital for protecting our internal organs but providing lubrication and cushioning.

What Dr. Simeons found is that adipose is rather like old gasoline that has turned to varnish. It is still combustible and full of energy, but it cannot be readily utilized as a fuel source. On the HCG program, adipose is “unlocked” so that the body uses it as a primary fuel source when on the VLCD. So, while you are ingesting only 500 calories, the body will automatically make up the shortage by dipping into energy rich adipose instead of muscle and viscera.

Why Exercise is Not Recommended

Naturally, during weight loss on the HCG program, your body is already burning calories at a furious rate in fact; it is burning these fat calories at the maximum rate. By engaging in strenuous exercise, you are literally “pushing the limits.” High-intensity aerobics and weight training will cause you to become dehydrated very quickly and your heart rate may exceed safe levels. People have been known to lose consciousness while engaging in strenuous exercise while on the HCG program.

What You Should Do

If you do combine the HCG Diet and Exercise, it’s a good idea to simply take a 1-2 mile stroll once a day, and this is in fact recommended in order maintain a healthy mood and get some oxygen to the brain.

Confused about the HCG Diet? 3 Major Questions Answered

Friday, October 30th, 2009

If you want to give the HCG diet a try, but have some lingering questions about it, let us put your mind at ease. Following are the top 3 questions we receive about the HCG diet, with our answers:

Q. Is the HCG diet safe?

A. Yes! HCG is a naturally-produced hormone in the human body. When used in tandem with a low-calorie diet, HCG triggers the brain to burn fat, not lean muscle tissue.  On the HCG diet, you will keep lean muscle and bone mass, while on other low-calorie diets, those are the first things your body loses. The HCG diet is safe for both men and women.

Q. How are your HCG drops derived?
A. HCG drops are manufactured in a homeopathic lab, according to the procedures outlined by the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. This lab has been manufacturing homeopathic remedies for over 20 years. Our oral HCG contains HCG and amino acids as well as a proprietary mixture of ingredients that aid in digestion, liver support, and lymphatic stimulus.

Q. Is the HCG diet easy to follow?

A. Yes, it is. The HCG diet can be adapted to any lifestyle. You eat a low-calorie diet comprised of lean meats, fruits, and veggies. You drink as much water as possible, as well as teas sweetened with Stevia. No exercise is allowed on the HCG program, so you do not need to worry about incorporating gym time into your daily routine. Simply take your HCG drops as directed, and that’s all you need to do.

If you are tired of chemical-laden diet foods and complex diet directives, the HCG diet may just be the answer to your dieting needs. It’s natural, safe, and easy to follow. What do you have to lose, besides unwanted weight? Give it a try today!
